What is a reclaim silicon wafer?
After removing the unwanted film from a wafer, the wafers are then polished, cleaned and sent back to the original customer for use as a test wafer. The process returns a wafer that is functionally equivalent to a new test wafer except for a slight reduction in thickness. Significant cost savings compared to a new test wafer provides a strong incentive to use reclaim wafers in any test wafer application.
Once a reclaim wafer has been recycled and becomes too thin or breaks during processing the wafer is no longer viable for semiconductor use, but becomes a great source for remelt in the already poly-shortage driven Solar Industry.
